About Me

Welcome to Running With Grit...the place dedicated to all things keeping us running and racing after 40.

My name is Sarah and running is a huge part of who I am. I started running as a teenager and was a walk-on Division 1 college track and cross country runner. Running has taught me so many lessons (good and bad) and most importantly, led me to meeting my lifelong friends and my husband.

In my 20s and early 30s, I was obsessed with finding the best training plan, reading the latest running book, and trying out the newest shoes (or barefoot running at the time). My weekends were spent racing and completing grueling (yet rewarding) long runs.

I believe that running is better when we are together. That's why I started the Running After 40 Podcast.

Unfortunately, injuries and slower times frustrated me, like most older runners.

  • I started to give up and become complacent.
  • My nutrition suffered.
  • My running suffered.
  • I wasn’t the mom, wife, or professional I wanted to be.

I changed my life by giving myself new challenges in nutrition, running, strength training, and mindset.

running in your 40s
A little more about me….I love exploring new trails, especially off-road. I love meeting other runners and always find this instant connection that I haven’t found outside of running. I am obsessed with green smoothies (recipe later), Trader Joes, personal development podcasts, technology, organization, and talking about running. I’m on a quest to find running socks that don’t get holes in them after just a few weeks.

At age 45, I can tell you that I still LOVE the benefits that running provides me and I want to do all that I can to keep on running and racing after 40.

Well, I also have a full-time job, a family (3 kids, 3 dogs and a husband), so I don’t have time to do every strength exercise, every stretch, prepare every meal perfectly- I need to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. That’s why I started Running With Grit.

Grit is a noun meaning made up of passion, hustle, and perseverance. See that ‘ever’ in perseverance? I think it’s a great message about running forever. Running like a champion doesn’t need to stop because of a number. Running and racing after 40 isn’t easy, but nothing good every came from easy.

Wait! Is running bad for your knees?

Over the years, I’ve become frustrated listening to things like…”Running is bad for your knees” and “I had to quit running because my body hurt! Personally, I had knee surgery and was told to quit running. That was the easy answer and I was not going to listen to easy.

I know what it feels like to want to give up and end up on the couch (it’s like the reverse of the couch to 5k).

I’m not an expert in treating or preventing injuries or creating training plans. What I love to do is find the best things and want to share my learnings with you! We have a free Facebook community or a fully supportive Run Over 40 Club.

I help runners and aspiring runners over 40 discover consistent, simple ways to eat, train and live so they can joyfully pursue their athletic ambitions and dreams.
